INDOOR GROWING • COMPLETE GUIDE

The Indoor Gardener's Toolkit 🌿

You don't need a garden shed full of tools to grow plants indoors… but a few essentials will save you headaches and sad plants.

Tools you actually need How-to setup Tips + troubleshooting

The Indoor Gardener's Essentials

1) Containers with Drainage Holes

  • Why? No drainage = root rot. Plants need airflow and proper watering.
  • Pro Tip: Repurpose containers (yogurt cups, tin cans) but drill some holes first.

2) Potting Mix (Not Garden Soil)

  • Indoor plants need light, airy soil. Garden dirt is too heavy and may bring in pests.
  • Here is my secret recipe:
My "secret" soil mix:
  • 1/2 Coir
  • 1/2 Potting Soil
  • Little bit of Vermiculite

Bonus Tip: Look for "organic potting mix" or "seed-starting mix" for best results.

3) Make sure that Soil is WET!

  • Ever tried to germinate a seed in dry soil? And then wondered why it's taking forever?
  • Moist soil is the unsung hero of germination. Starting with wet soil makes planting easier and helps roots take off fast.
  • So before you sow, soak that soil! 🌱

4) Watering Can or Spray Bottle

  • Use a narrow-spout watering can or a spray bottle.
  • Keeps moisture even and prevents drowning seedlings.

Upgrade Your Setup (When You're Ready)

Plant LabelsSo you remember what's what (because you will forget).

Okay… Now What? Here's How to Set It Up

This is the part people skip. And it's why they end up with leggy plants and soggy soil.

1) Pick the right spot

  • Near an outlet (for lights)
  • Away from cold drafts and heat vents
  • Somewhere you'll actually look at your plants daily

2) Set up lights first

If you're using grow lights, get them up before you plant. Put them on a timer. Plants LOVE consistency.

Simple light rules:
  • 12–16 hours per day
  • Keep lights close (raise them as plants grow)
  • If plants stretch = they want more light

3) Plant, label, and don't crowd the pot

Follow seed depth. Give plants space. Label everything. That's it.

4) Water smart (don't drown your plants)

Water when the top inch of soil feels dry-ish. If it's still damp, wait.

Best Plants to Start With Indoors

Easy wins that grow fast and don't make you hate indoor gardening.

  • Leafy greens (lettuce, spinach)
  • Herbs (basil, cilantro, parsley)
  • Microgreens
  • Green onions (seriously… so easy)

Common Indoor Gardening Mistakes

OverwateringIt's the #1 issue. Wet soil isn't the goal — healthy roots are.
Not enough lightLeggy plants = your setup needs more light.
Using outdoor dirtHeavy soil holds water and brings problems inside.
No airflowStill air = mold, pests, weak stems. A small fan on low helps.

Quick Troubleshooting

Yellow leaves
Usually too much water. Let soil dry a bit and make sure drainage is working.
Tall + floppy plants
Not enough light. Move the light closer or increase hours.
Wilting
Could be too dry, too wet, or too hot. Check soil first, then airflow and temperature.
Mold on soil
Too wet + no airflow. Water less and add a small fan on low.

Don't overthink it — just plant something and learn as you go.
